I Found My Niche at Mount Saint Mary’s University

Student Name: Samantha De La Torre
School: Mount Saint Mary’s University
Major: Film, Media, & Social Justice
“I’m Samantha De La Torre, a fourth-year student at Mount Saint Mary’s University!
When it came to college, I knew I wanted to make a change, but the question was— in which industry? This question led me on the road to self-discovery, in which I took a few courses in several areas of study to determine where I was most passionate. As a creative, I found myself most drawn to the film and entertainment industry. I then searched through my school’s academic catalog to find a film class, and the rest was history.
I declared myself a Film, Media, & Social Justice major by my second semester of sophomore year. This was an exciting yet stressful time for me because I thought it meant that I would be limited to being an expert in only one subject.
I learned later that that would not be the case. As a Film, Media, and Social Justice major, I have found that my talents and knowledge can be an asset to any position I desire. I began exploring possibilities in public relations, social media managing, digital marketing, and commercial advertising. I have engaged in several roles, such as videographer, editor, producer, locations manager, blogger, director, and producer. Since the pandemic, I have also realized even more that media and storytelling have a huge impact and I am happy to be on a career path that has the power to influence and inspire the world. Also, coming from an all-women’s university has taught me that there is no limit to what I can achieve.” –@delatoday
